I am a self taught in all the mediums I work with. Over the years this has included wood, stone, steel, silver, copper, clay and at the moment deer antler, which I really enjoy working with. Because of my beliefs, which I term as “a follower of the ancient traditions of this land”. I love working with natural materials that have or have had a spirit of their own. To bring forward an image or a personality from this material that takes on another life or role is very rewarding. I tend to let the stone tell me what’s inside and wants to come out just by sitting with it and letting the images flow. Otherwise I may want to create a specific image and choose the stone to suit. I love Celtic knot work and find drawing and carving the spirals and knots both invigorating and soothing.
I do paint a little and find I use the same format of asking who or what wants to come forward through my art, then using meditation to formulate the image which I make sketches of until I feel its right.
My website is called greenmanspirit but recently I am being drawn to create images of Goddesses, I feel the best art is created when you follow the flow of energy so that’s what I’m doing. If each piece of art I create only reaches or touches one person then I feel I have played my part in the grand scheme of things and have been the messenger for that person.
Because what I do comes naturally to me I feel I have found the gift I have been given to use in this lifetime. Recognising your gift is a true blessing and I feel not using it is going against your life’s purpose.
Working with the stag antler to create stags head pendants is wonderful because you’re creating an image of a majestic animal from a piece of that animal which powerfully represents it and yet grows and falls of every year !
Similarly creating a Goddess pendant from stag antler is wonderful because you’re creating a powerful feminine image, yet have balance because the stags antler is so powerfully male !
